Replacing a damaged truck cab: swap or repair?
Repair the cab when the damage is limited to bolt-on parts and outer panels. Replace it when the structure is damaged (the pillars, roof, floor or cab mountings), when rust has spread, or when the repair quote and the time off the road add up to more than a replacement cab.
Start with the damage
The right choice depends on what is damaged, not only on how bad it looks. Ask your panel beater or the assessor to check:
- The cab structure: the A-pillars, the roof, the floor, the back wall and the door openings. If a door no longer closes properly or the windscreen frame is out of shape, the structure has moved.
- The mounting points: the cab mounts, the tilt hinges and their brackets, and the cab lock. The cab must sit square and tilt safely.
- Rust: the lower corners, the floor seams, the bottoms of the doors and the area around the windscreen.
- Bolt-on parts: the bumper, grille, front panel, mirrors, lights, steps and doors. These can usually be replaced on their own.
When repairing makes sense
If the damage is mostly to bolt-on parts and outer panels, replacing just those parts is usually quicker and cheaper than swapping the cab. A typical front-end knock might need:
- a bumper and a grille
- a front panel and corner panels
- lights and indicators and mirrors
- steps and step boxes
Used parts that match your truck’s model and years keep the cost down. Our listings show the side (left or right) and the years each part fits.
When a replacement cab makes sense
- The pillars, roof or floor are bent, or the cab has been pushed back on its mountings.
- Rust has spread into the floor, the cab mounting points or the lower corners.
- So many panels, glass and trim parts are damaged that parts and labour come close to the price of a replacement cab.
- The truck needs to be working again quickly, and a ready cab is faster than a long body-shop job.
A semi-trim cab comes with part of its trim already fitted, so there is less to move across from the old cab.
Compare the full cost of each route
| Cost | Repair the cab | Replace the cab |
|---|---|---|
| Parts | The panels, glass and trim to replace | The replacement cab, plus any parts it doesn’t include |
| Labour | Straightening, welding, filling and paint | Removing the old cab, moving parts across, fitting and connecting |
| Paint | The repaired areas, blended in | Possibly the whole cab, if the colour differs |
| Time off the road | Can be long for structural repairs | Often shorter when the cab is ready to collect |
Get a written quote for both routes. If the truck is insured, involve the assessor early: the assessor’s view often decides whether a cab is repaired or replaced.
What to check on a replacement cab
- The same make, model and years as your truck. Send the VIN to be sure: see how to find your truck’s model, year and VIN.
- The same cab type: day or sleeper, standard or wide.
- What is included, compared with what you can re-use from the old cab.
- The condition of the mounting points, floor and door openings. Use our used truck cab checklist.
- The colour, and whether you will need to paint the cab.
The paperwork: the VIN stays with the chassis
A truck’s identity is its VIN and engine number, which are recorded on its registration certificate. On most trucks the VIN is stamped on the chassis, so swapping the cab doesn’t change it. If the work does change the VIN or the engine, the vehicle needs a South African Police Service (SAPS) clearance before its records can be updated. If you are unsure, ask your registering authority or testing station before you start.
How we can help
Send us photos of the damage and your truck’s VIN on WhatsApp (082 300 5322). We’ll tell you which parts or cabs we have that fit, so you can compare them with your repair quote. Browse truck cabs and cab and body parts, or view them at our yard in Randfontein by appointment.
